  • (Probably) the sitter and her second husband, john Poulett, 2 Baron Poulett (1615-1665), William Kerr, 1 Earl of Lothian (c. 1605-1675), by whom presented in 1667 to Edward Hyde, 1 Earl of Clarendon (1608-1674), and by descent to his son Henry, 2 Earl of Clarendon (1638-1709), recorded at Cornbury, Wiltshire, circa 1683-5 (British Library MS 19027) and circa 1721-1731 by Vertye (loc. Cit. ), And by descent to Henry Hyde, 4 Earl of Clarendon (1672-1752) and by inheritance to his daughter, Catherine, Duchess of Queensberry and Dover (d. 1777), recorded at Amesbury, Wiltshire, in 1769 by Musgrave (loc. Cit. ), And by inheritance to Archibald, 1 Lord Douglas (d. 1827), at Bothwell Castle, Lanarkshire, and by descent to his eldest daughter and co-heiress, Jane Douglas (d. 1859), who married Henry Scott, 2 Lord Montagu of Boughton (1778-1845), and by inheritance to their daughter, Lucy Scott, who married Cospartrick, 11th Earl of Home (1799-1881), and by descent to Charles Douglas- Home, 13 Earl of Home (1873-1951), Christie's, London, 20 June 1919, lot 98 (bought Glen), J. Scope and content This series comprises images of works by artists who were British by birth, foreign artists who worked in Britain or foreign artists who painted British sitters abroad. The works featured date from c.1500 to c.1900. The images in this series form by far the largest part of the Photographic Archive. Images remain in their original order: organised A–Z by artist name. Significant artists, or those for which there is a wealth of material, have multiple folders of images. In these cases, images are further subdivided by genre or type, depending on the artist. They may also be organised in ‘catalogue raisonné order’. The images predominantly depict oil paintings but prints and other works on paper are also included.
Acquisition information The collection has always been in the possession of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (or its predecessor institution, the Paul Mellon Foundation).

Conditions governing use The images in the Photographic Archive are derived from a variety of sources, so copyright in the collection is varied. The copyright status of each image is detailed at item level in the catalogue.
Accruals It is anticipated that new images may be added to the Centre’s Photographic Archive in future. These may be generated via the Centre’s everyday activities (such as the publishing programme). They may also come from external sources (such as donations by scholars or institutions).
