This website, located at photoarchive.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk (the ‘website’) is published and maintained by The Paul Mellon Centre (PMC) with offices located at 16 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3JA; telephone number: 020 7580 0311.

Information About Private Owners of Works of Art
This website includes images of works of art in private hands. Some of these images were taken by the PMC’s own photographer, others were acquired from third parties (such as the Courtauld Photographic Survey). All the images are accompanied by information about the object, which may include personal data concerning ownership – primarily name of owner.
In addition to rules around research and archiving, the processing of personal data with the intention of publishing academic, artistic or literary material is generally exempt from data protection law. The personal data relating to living individuals on this website, however, is minimal.
Where images depict works of art in private hands, the PMC aims to respect and honour the arrangements entered into at the time of acquisition. Whatever conditions were previously requested in respect of anonymity have been observed: most owners preferred to be listed as ‘Private Collection’. In order to uphold our responsibilities under the GDPR, the PMC also carried out consultation exercises with owners in 2019, and third-party suppliers in 2021. Any objections raised as a result of these initiatives have been observed.

User Provided Information
The Paul Mellon Centre does not collect any personal information from users of this website without their knowledge. General access to images does not require the submission of any personal data. Users wishing to save their searches/create a personal ‘collection’ of images will need to register. This process involves providing the following personal data:
- full name
- email address.
Personal data collected as a result of the registration process will be used for the purpose of enabling the save search/create a personal collection facility. It may also be used by the PMC to conduct research into the use of the website and to let you know about any relevant PMC initiatives. It will not be passed to any third parties.
